How to read a tyre size, load index and speed rating

- 275 — section width
- Width of the tyre in millimetres, sidewall to sidewall.
- 40 — aspect ratio
- Sidewall height as a percentage of the width (40% of 275 mm ≈ 110 mm).
- R — construction
- Radial construction. “ZR” marks tyres rated above 240 km/h; “RF” in place of “R” (for example 205/55 RF16) marks a run-flat tyre.
- 20 — rim diameter
- Wheel rim diameter in inches.
- 106 — load index
- Maximum load per tyre at the specified pressure: 106 = 950 kg per tyre. “XL” (extra load) or “RF” (reinforced) after the size marks a higher-load version.
- Y — speed rating
- Maximum speed at the rated load: Y = 300 km/h. A service description in brackets, such as (98Y), means the tyre is rated above 300 km/h.
