How to read a tyre size, load index and speed rating

255 — section width
Width of the tyre in millimetres, sidewall to sidewall.
60 — aspect ratio
Sidewall height as a percentage of the width (60% of 255 mm ≈ 153 mm).
R — construction
Radial construction. “ZR” marks tyres rated above 240 km/h; “RF” in place of “R” (for example 205/55 RF16) marks a run-flat tyre.
18 — rim diameter
Wheel rim diameter in inches.
112 — load index
Maximum load per tyre at the specified pressure: 112 = 1,120 kg per tyre. “XL” (extra load) or “RF” (reinforced) after the size marks a higher-load version.
H — speed rating
Maximum speed at the rated load: H = 210 km/h. A service description in brackets, such as (98Y), means the tyre is rated above 300 km/h.
