Grapeseed oil is recovered from the seeds left after pressing grapes for wine, then refined. It is light in body and mild in taste, which is why kitchens use it where a heavier or more assertive oil would be noticed: in vinaigrettes, in delicate baking, and for quick sautéing. Because it is a by-product of the wine harvest, supply and price follow the vintage.

Grades and how they are used

Refined grapeseed oil

The standard traded grade — refined, bleached and deodorised.

Character: Pale to light green-yellow, thin in body, clean tasting.

  • Sautéing and pan frying
  • Baking
  • Vinaigrettes, mayonnaise and emulsified dressings

Culinary applications

  • Sautéing and quick pan cooking
  • Salad dressings and emulsified sauces
  • Baking
  • Infusing with herbs, garlic or chilli
  • Food service use where a light oil is wanted

Cooking with heat

Used for sautéing and general cooking rather than long, hard deep frying. As with any oil, the temperature it will take depends on refining and free fatty acid content — check the lot specification.

Smoke point is not published here as a single figure. It varies with refinement, free fatty acid content, filtration and how often an oil has been used, so the figure that matters is the one on the specification for the lot supplied.

HS note: Confirm the national tariff line; some markets provide a separate statistical code for grapeseed oil.

The 6-digit HS subheading is internationally harmonised; confirm the full national tariff line with your customs broker. Container loading is calculated once carton dimensions, gross weights, the pallet pattern and the applicable payload limit are known — it is not estimated from the pack size alone.
